Xanga

Xanga.com didn’t originally start off as a social networking site. It was a place for people to join where members could get their own “home portal” to review books, music, and link to their favorite sites.

The site quickly evolved to a traditional blog format in 2000 so that members could create profile pages and personal blogging area:

Xanga has now evolved into a full-blown social networking site with all the typical goodies like blogs, photoblogs, videoblogs, audioblogs, and a mini-blog called “Pulse.”  The homepage features popular weblogs at the moment along with quick access to profiles, blogs, photos, blogrings, etc.

Pulse is a mini-blog feature that was added to Xanga in February 2007 –  originally made popular by Tweeter.com.  It’s essentially for short sentences to talk about what’s happening that particular moment.

A typical profile page on Xanga looks more like a blog – except the top navigation allows access to the member’s shared photos, videos, music, etc.

And the site makes it very easy to subscribe to other people’s xanga page – so that members will be notified whenever another page has been updated.

Demographics

Xanga.com has over 4 million unique visitors from the United States per month – and nearly 10 million globally. 73% of members U.S. visitors are Caucasian. There are slightly more females (54%) than females.
