Twitter.com is a social networking site centered around micro-blogging (or instant messaging). Each member has 140 characters to type in a message about what they are doing at that particular moment. Messages can include a link to a particular website.
Posting on Twitter
There are a variety of ways to post messages on twitter. One way is to simply use the interface on Twitter.com to submit the message.
However, there are a variety of third party applications that members may use to post directly into Twitter.
For example, Twirl This! is an app that can be added to a browser window.
Whenever the button is clicked, a popup opens that allows members to quickly twitter. The popup automatically includes a shortened URL of the website you happen to be visiting so that you can easily reference it.
Another popular application for Twitter is “Twhirl” which works and looks just like an instant messenger client. This can allow members to easily keep track of the tweets by various members.
Members may also submit their tweet by texting from their mobile phone.
Profile Pages
Profile pages look similar to a blog. The left hand side is an archive of all the “tweets” submitted by the member.
The right hand column has info about the user. Members may add their full name, location, and brief bio.
And the stats reveal how many members on Twitter are “followers” (reading his or her feed) and how many members the user is “following” (or reading). Popular members in Twitter can have 10,000 plus followers, which gives them quick access to potentially thousands of people.
Demographics
Twitter.com has roughly 1 million unique visitors from the United States, and has more female members (53%). There is a wide diversity in age ranges. 83% of users are Caucasian.
