MySpace

MySpace.com is the most popular social networking site in the world, and occupies 73.45% market share across all social networking sites (as of February 2008).  MySpace allows members to create profile pages, join groups, instant message each other, watch videos, post bulletins, vote on news, check out classifieds, and access their account through their mobile phone. The site reportedly receives 230,000 new registrations per day on average.

Profile pages
The profile pages of MySpace are customized and themed by members however they want, except they may not cover up advertising.  MySpace users may play with the CSS and HTML coding to design their page as they wish, which has led to problems since most members aren’t skilled web designers.  This can cause pages to load slowly or not work properly.

MySpace News
The MySpace news area launched in April 2007, and allows members to vote on stories they like.  Unfortunately, news stories may not be added by members.  News stories are editorial managed.  However, members may recommend blogs, websites, and RSS feeds to pull news from.  This news site hasn’t been a very popular feature, and it’s rare to find over 10 votes on any story.

News is categorized in a variety of topics, like animals, gossip, sports, music, gaming, technology, etc.

MySpace TV
MySpaceTV launched in early 2007, and operates similar to YouTube where members may upload videos, comment on them, rate and share on their MySpace page or other website (simply by pasting the embedded code).

MySpace became extremely popular when they allowed bands to create profile pages and let people stream their music.  Bands are still allowed to do this, but they are limited to streaming up to 6 songs.

Demographics
MySpace.com averages about 47 million unique visitors from the United States per month. 70% of visitors are Caucasian, and 60% of visitors are under 34 years old. 38% are between the ages of 18 and 24. The site also has more female visitors (58%) than men (42%).
