Gather

Gather.com is essentially a MySpace for the NPR crowd, where people connect and talk about issues that are important to them.

Members post articles and comments about a variety of subjects; including: books, food, health, money, movies, music, politics, news, writing, travel, and much more.  The more members contribute, the more points they receive – and sometimes top contributors will receive money for their participation.

Gather.com has partnerships with companies like McGraw-Hill, Hearst Publications, American Public Media, and Starbucks.

Each member receives their own subdomain (for their profile), where they can publish articles, share comments, and find members who have similar interests.

Similar to other social networking sites, there are video and picture galleries.  One unique feature to Gather.com is that members can vote on articles posted by other members.  The more popular an article, the higher it can move up the list, and eventually appear on the highest rated article list.
