Friendster
Friendster.com is one of the first social networks to gain huge popularity in 2002.. Jonathan Abrams developed the idea for Friendster after thinking about a way to make Match.com more of a social site.
As the site grew successful, he brought on too many venture capitalists and web experts, which caused development to slow down. Even though Friendster doesn’t attract its original demographic (20 to 30 year olds in the United States), the site is still popular among teenagers in Indonesia, Philippines, and Malaysia. The site is considered in the top 5 most popular social network sites (comscore, 2007). However, it is now ranked #14 as of February 2008 by HitWise.
