Club Penguin

Club Penguin is a social network game site designed for children (ages 6 to 14), but open to anyone. The site was purchased by Disney in August 2007.

Each member in Club Penguin has a cartoon penguin that allows them to play games and chat with others. There is no cost to join, but members who pay a membership fee ($5.95/month) receive more privileges within the game like decorating their igloo, being invited to discover new areas, and opportunities to buy clothing. The fees help support their ad-free platform.

As of April 2008, there are 700,000 paid subscribers according to CrunchBase.com.

After joining, there is a brief tutorial for parents to learn how to site works. Every room is moderated to protect children from online predators.

Every penguin has his own igloo that can be decorated by spending coins (earned through playing games). Every member is given 100 coins to begin with.

You can flip through a catalog to see what items you’d like to purchase for the igloo.

And whenever members want to play with others, they can select one of the areas of the map to join. In these locations they can talk with others, throw snowballs or play games.

By simply clicking on any penguin, you can send them a message.
