Cafemom
Cafemom.com is a niche social networking site developed exclusively for moms – and includes all the typical social network features like journal areas, community groups, profile pages, photo galleries, etc.
According to one of their press releases, they are focusing on targeting American moms because they control 80% of household spending.
Here’s a brief explanation of the various sections on the site:
Today Section
The today section shows profiles on various moms who have something special happening that day. For exampleL birthdays, expecting a baby, new baby delivered, and new members. This is also an area where members can find out who is currently logged-in and what members are contributing the most content to the site.
There is also a “Thought Bubbles” section, which gives members a quick look at various moms posting blogs right at the moment it’s being viewed.
Photo Section
The photo section is just what you’d expect – an area which allows members to view picture galleries from other members. This is also a jumping off point to view different profile pages from different moms.
Journal Section
The journal area is simply a spot that aggregates popular blog posts from the various moms posting on the site. It’s a quick way to see what mom’s are talking about within the site.
Cafemom Hotlist
In February 2008, Cafemom launched the Hot List – a news aggregator service similar to Digg.com. This is a place where members can submit articles that interest them.
Articles that members enjoy can get voted on with a “bump.” Unlike Digg.com, there is not a way to vote against the article.
As of April 2008, news on the Caremom Hotlist is divided into various categories: Current Events, Health, Entertainmetn, Parenting, and Alerts & Recalls. The main page aggregates the most popular stories among all categories.
Groups Section
The groups area is a place for moms to find groups that might interest them.
Small Changes Section
The small changes section focuses on how moms can get involved in conservation efforts – and provides tips on how to make smart decisions to help the environment.
Profile Pages
As with any other social networking site, profile pages can be customized to whatever theme the member wants, and can be filled with photos, journaling, and other members can leave messages on the profile page in the “chatterbox” area – which is like “The Wall” section of a Facebook profile page.
Demographics
The site has been averaging around 1.5 million members, with a strong majority of visitors from the United States.
